Two years have passed at Saint Hubert.

Life there is peaceful, perhaps too much so for Adélaïde and Simon, who suffer from a lack of friends their own age. But the arrival of Stanislas, Bernard's son (the former president of the village hunters), who has returned to live in the countryside with his wife and two children, is a welcome change.
