There are numerous conservation sites and initiatives to ensure more responsible and sustainable tourism. A little insight!

Esprit Parc National

A symbol of support

You have probably already spotted the Esprit Parc National logo. So, what exactly is it? Quite simply, it is the emblem which is used in France’s ten national parks. It embodies the concept of support and promotes the local economy. But how does it work? Mercantour Park awards the Esprit Parc National emblem to local businesses who are committed to protecting and promoting the region through their products and services. Certified service providers can be recognised by this logo.

Mercantour Ecotourism

An association for sustainable tourism

The Mercantour Ecotourism Association brings together some sixty businesses committed to sustainable tourism. Open to all tourism industry representatives concerned about protecting the local environment, it works hand in hand with Mercantour National Park to develop ecotourism initiatives. For visitors, the website is a treasure trove of information listing all the businesses and services available. These include accommodation, restaurants, farms and producers, craftsmen, cultural activities and sports… The interactive map allows visitors to quickly find where they are located. A valuable tool for visitors looking for a more environmentally responsible holiday experience!

Natura 2000

Protected areas

Numerous Natura 2000 classified sites exist in the Menton, Riviera & Merveilles region. In Mercantour Park, for example, there are four Natura 2000 sites. The seabed is also included. The French Riviera coast, known as Cap Martin, benefits from this status for 16 km of its coastline, allowing us to protect species such as the Bottlenose dolphin and Loggerhead sea turtle, as well as habitats like the Posidonia meadows. So, why are these sites classified? The aim is to protect them while at the same time considering biodiversity issues in terms of human activities. A further commitment to our region’s future!

Natura 2000

The Pelagos Sanctuary

A protected marine area

The Pelagos Sanctuary is a protected marine area covering 87,500 m2. In 1999, France, Italy and Monaco signed the Pelagos Agreement which protects the local marine mammals and their habitats against all sources of disruption from human activities. Since 2012, the City of Menton has been a signatory of the Pelagos Charter, and in 2020, the Municipality of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the Communauté d’Agglomération de la Riviera Française also expressed their commitment to the sanctuary. A wonderful opportunity to protect this magnificent marine environment!

Respecting the environment and biodiversity

While the “Villes et Villages Fleuris” label naturally acknowledges flowers, for which it is best known, it also recognises the communities’ efforts in respecting the environment and biodiversity. Since 1984, Menton has been awarded the highest level, the 4 Fleur label, which highlights the town’s commitment to sustainable development. A recognition that reflects the city’s outstanding quality of life! Sainte-Agnès, Beausoleil, Castillon, La Brigue and Tende also benefit from this label.
