If you like fishing then you’ll love our lakes and rivers! The warm climate, lush valleys and high mountains mean the French Riviera is big on fish. The area is home to a variety of fishing zones that are approved and free if you have a fishing permit. Thriving brown trout populations await newcomers and amateurs alike. Try all our “introductory” and “no kill” zones in calm or whitewater for an exciting spot of fishing in an equally exceptional setting!

The Roya and Bévéra Valleys are home to 130km of fishing zones. The Menton, Riviera & Merveilles destination is packed with gorges and mountain lakes where fishermen are spoilt for choice. Most of the fishing sites are listed as category 1 too.

The Roya and Bévéra are two major mountain streams in the region. Their waters are a goldmine for fishermen, no matter their ability. Signs signal where the riverside fishing zones are.

The Bévéra:

the realm of brown trout

The Bévéra is a Franco-Italian river whose source is in the Authion mountains at an altitude of 1980m south of Mercantour National Park. The entire French side is a category 1 fishing site covering 27km in length.

It’s the the realm of brown trout! From its source to the Gorges du Piaon upstream, it’s the only species colonising the river. Further down it’s joined by souffia, Mediterranean barbel, minnow, eels and even some white-clawed crayfish.

Calling all adventurers!

Despite being steep, the Bévéra’s many tributaries provide a fabulous playground for brave fishermen in search of adventure and me-time.

The Roya:

the most Italian river in France

In the Upper Roya Valley’s whitewater, the Roya river’s source is at an altitude of 1781m on Col de Tende and it flows into the Mediterranean through Ventimiglia in Italy. It is a total of 59km long and the last 19km of it are in Italy.

But did you know? The Roya was entirely in the Kingdom of Sardinia before 1860. The towns of Tende and La Brigue didn’t become part of France, moving the Franco-Italian border, until 1947.

The Roya is packed with fish, a famous fishing destination and a go-to for fly fishing. What sets it apart is the trophy fish that call it home.

Open the pêche on the road from March 9 to September 15.

The conditions of the pêche remain at different times for Breil (interdiction of pêcher in the Roya de Breil à St Dalmas, as well as in la Maglia and Lavina). The land area is automatically placed in the bathroom. From the upper reaches of the Roya river in the valley at Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende, to the lakes of the Vallée des Merveilles at an altitude of 2,500 m, via the many torrents of Alpine vegetation that rise from the highest peaks of the Mercantour National Park, our region is full of extraordinary fishing spots, just a stone’s throw from the Côte d’Azur coastline.

Just 1 hour 15 minutes from Nice, and less than 45 minutes from Menton and the Riviera, fishing in Wonderland opens the door to all its secrets…

These are easy-to-reach zones where a regular influx of trout make it easy to fish. They are ideal for beginners who want to practise fishing and experts who just want to have a nice little outing.
