The ancient Lascaris castle

Historic site and monument in Tende
  • The ancient Lascaris Castle. The surroundings are characterized by terraces grounds and majestics mountains.

  • The castle was probably built at this location in the 14th century. The only remaining part of the building is a section of the donjon, the inner tower. The castle was destroyed by the troops of king Louis XIV in 1692 after the failed assault on Cuneo. In the 19th century, the ancient courtyard and the outbuildings became the town cemetery. Clarence Bicknell, one of the discoverers of the Vallée des Merveilles petroglyphs, is buried here.
