This walk in the old town of Menton starts in the street St Michel and brings you via the Ramps St Michel, to the medieval Menton. You will reach the calade of the Basilica square, the chapel of the white penitents and the cemetery of the old castle.
1 - We start our walk from the pedestrian street Saint Michel that
we go up to the famous Place aux Herbes, formerly market place, with its central fountain, then the Place du Cap, which leads us to the Jardin du Campanin, a dream place for a break before the climb in the old Menton.
2- We access the old town by the Rue des Logettes. Let’s go under one of the old walled gates of the old town that overlooks Rue Longue. After a hundred meters, you arrive at the ramps of the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. There, we can see the Hotel Pretti, a mansion located opposite the Saint-Michel ramp, which was inscribed as a historic monument in 1989.
3- Arriving at the top of this majestic staircase, the square of the basilica covered with pebbles, the famous «Calades», is offered to us. On the left, the basilica, higher in front of us, the Chapel of the White Penitents (typical to the development of the counter-reform redefined by the Council of Trent), much more decorated, it is classified historical monument since 1947. The chapel and basilica form a unique baroque ensemble on the French Riviera.
4- Continue along the Montée du Souvenir or through the alleys of history to reach the picturesque cemetery of the old castle, established since 1808 on the remains of the castle that protected the city from the thirteenth to the end of the sixteenth century. Its high location makes it an extraordinary lookout.
5- Let us leave the cemetery to admire a magical point of view: the roofs of the old town on the right, the sea as far as the eye can see in front, the Italian point on the left. The beauty of the site is accentuated by lutrins, placed back to the sea. Benches call us to rest, before continuing our way on the boulevard de Garavan, for 3 kms to the border post «Saint Louis».
Possible return by bus via Line 18.
