Montée du Souvenir, 06500 Menton
Built on the site of the old castle and culminating at 63 meters it has a view going from Italy to Cape Martin. It consists of superimposed terraces.
Foreign burials and those of Mentonnais rub shoulders.
The former castle of Menton, which became national property, was acquired by the Commune in 1807. After extensive development work, the necropolis became permanent in 1902.
The graves of Menton families are close to those of foreign colonies. Fleeting memories of human vanity, some names are remembered: John Richard Green, English historian, Alfred Woltmann, German historian, William Webb Ellis, the inventor of rugby, Hans Georg Tersling, Danish architect, Abel Glena and Alfred Marsang, architects from Menton, John Moggridge, British botanist, Caroll of Carollton, one of the founders of the American hospital of Neuilly and Prince Troubetzkoy, aide-de-camp of the tzar.
How can I be sad in this lovely kingdom of rest? What seductive villas of eternity that these small chapels of Carrara, well closed where, assured of a lasting lodging, the tenant always has housing ready, without concern for the term, without worries of concierge! A bronze ring that we lift, then let it fall, and the lease begins, a lease that renews itself, by tacit renewal.
Flowers, statues, busts, medallions adorn the romantic remains of this fortress now in the custody of the camarde.
