Hameau de Castérino, 06430 Tende
This path on the left bank of the Fontanalba torrent links Casterino to the Lac des Grenouilles and offers a beautiful walk.
This trail is dedicated to Clarence Bicknell, who recorded the rock engravings on Mont Bego at the end of the 19th century. From his home at the beginning of the trail, he used this path to reach the archaeological site. This path, commemorating his regular exploration of this historic site, has now been restored by the Croc montagne association.
The first section is a little steep, skirting the Fontanalbe valley to reach marker 390. Continue north towards marker 392, then turn off towards Lac des grenouilles. The view of the eastern face of Mont Bego is breathtaking, with herds of chamois often seen here in June-July, and dozens of marmots roaming the meadows at the lower vacherie.
For the return journey, you can follow the same path or choose to make a loop by taking the old military track that leads to Castérino at marker 390 (walking time is the same as on the Bicknell trail).
Tourism info: Marmots, chamois, ibex... Let the silence settle in and watch - it's teeming with life!
