Departure from Castérino. In the heart of the Mercantour National Park, this easy hike follows wide military trails to one of two rock engraving sites.

This easy walk leads to one of the two cave painting sites of the Merveilles, above Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende. Less well known than the Arpette, which is nearby, the Fontanalbe sector has a surprising wealth of “petroglyphs”, inspired by agriculture. The pastoral people of yesteryear have left an indelible reminder of their summer passage here around 4,000 years ago. This grandiose site, studded by numerous lakes, is dominated by Mont Bégo (2,872 m), an imposing summit, a symbol of divinity. Forests of larch, peaceful lakes and archaeological remains combine pleasantly to offer a route which can be completed by a guided visit from the Jumeaux lakes or the refuge of Fontanalbe (visits organised daily, registration on site during the summer season).
