Menton's covered market, Marché des Halles, marks the date of construction, 1898, with a small campanile (bell tower) crowning the main entrance to this popular covered market with many fish, vegetables and flowers.
In 1882, the mayor of Menton, Emile Biovès, decided to create a covered market. The project was carried out by the Menton architect Adrien Rey (1865-1959) and was completed in 1898.
The building had to meet two main requirements for a well-functioning market: the need for a very large ventilation combined with the need to create as much shade as possible.
Good sun protection is established across the entire façade and forms a protected porch to the main entrance.
The architect has not forgotten the aesthetics. The building is animated by a great diversity of materials and colours: stone floors, plaster, brick, wood, ceramic decorations from the Mentonnaise Saïssi factory.
