At the northern entrance to the medieval village, the Porte d'Italie is built in a pointed arch along a rocky outcrop visible on the west side. On the east side, the small chapel of the Annonciade of the White Penitents of Tende, with its 15th-century frescoes.
Leaving the village through this gate, carriers on the salt route between Nice and Turin had to pay gabelle and other taxes to gain the right to pass through the Col de Tende. This stopover was also an opportunity to change mounts; horses were replaced by much sturdier mules. In memory of this period, Saint-Eloi is celebrated every second Sunday in July.
