The imposing station at Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende was built by the Italian railways on behalf of Mussolini. The dictator had a country house in Saint-Dalmas which can be seen from the station.

The border station was inaugurated in 1928 on the occasion of the opening of the Nice-Coni railway line. It became French when Tende and La Brigue became part of France in 1947.
The passenger building, a huge stone building today abandoned and with walled entrances, owes its disproportionate appearance for a village stopover to its status as an Italian border station until 1947. These buildings were used in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by an SNCF holiday camp. To the south, the station at Fontan-Saorge fulfilled the same role on the French side. The building, less imposing, but just as large for a stopover, now houses an SNCF holiday centre.
