Between the Alps and the Mediterranean, the mountains have never been a border. For centuries, they have been a place of passage, exchange and encounters between the French and Italian peoples.
Today, this shared history continues thanks to the European Interreg ALCOTRA programme, which supports cooperation projects between French and Italian Alpine regions. RivierALP is one such project. With the support of the European Union, partners on both sides of the border have joined forces to develop a shared tourist destination, based on walking and cycling tours, the exploration of local heritage and respect for natural areas.
ALCOTRA stands for ‘Alpes Latines Cross-Border Cooperation’. This European programme supports projects that promote cooperation between French and Italian regions in the Alpine arc. Its aim is to work together to address shared challenges: sustainable development, mobility, heritage conservation, the attractiveness of the regions and the quality of life of their residents. By encouraging cross-border initiatives, Interreg ALCOTRA helps to develop solutions that transcend administrative boundaries and create new opportunities for both residents and visitors.
RivierALP was born out of the desire of several French and Italian partners to work together to promote an exceptional region situated between the Alps and the Mediterranean.
The project has made it possible to:
The result: a unique destination where you can cross two countries, discover several cultures and explore landscapes of remarkable diversity all in a single journey.
With the support of Interreg ALCOTRA and the European Union, RivierALP invites you to discover the Southern Alps and the Riviera in a different way. Walk or cycle from one valley to another. Pass through villages steeped in history. Meet enthusiastic locals. Take the time to understand a region rather than simply passing through it.
This is RivierALP’s mission: to transform a border into a bridge and make the Alps-Mediterranean region a sustainable, vibrant destination that looks to the future.
