A passion for horses

Given our region’s signature horizon, donkeys, mules and horses were used to transport people and crops. These mountain traditions have left us with little woodland paths, bridleways and transhumance trails that tourists and visitors can now explore on horseback. Horse and donkey rides mean you can embrace the natural setting and see another side to the Riviera’s stunning scenery, whether you trot or gallop…

The Sainte-Agnès trail on the shore

This medium-difficulty horse ride on the shore covers 24.5km. It takes you to the age-old hilltop village of Sainte-Agnès, Europe’s highest coastal village above Roquebrune Bay. Classic routes mingle with woodland paths overlooking the coast.

The Farguet traila mountain ridge path

The fabulous mountain ridge path covers 18km and gives you unobstructed panoramic views of the former County of Nice, the coast and Estérel Massif.

Take a trip back in time when you reach the belvedere on the Lavina Spur overlooking the village of Sospel 800m below.

The Piène Haute deep in the countryside

This mountain ridge trail is fairly challenging but its lovely wide paths treat you to amazing views of the surrounding valleys and Breil-sur-Roya. A path leads up to the Viravourgio huts whose stone buildings provide a summer residence for farmers.

Les Ecuries de la Roya stable, in the stunning Col de Brouis between Breil-sur-Roya and Sospel, provides horse rides with unobstructed views of the sea, Corsica and surrounding mountains.

    This wonderful 19km ride in the sprawling Turini Forest, famous for its many tree species, seeps you in a magical mountain setting. The village of Moulinet, where your trail begins and ends, awaits on its little plateau with the Bévéra running through it.

    The Bévéra and Royagrand tour

    A grand tour of the Bévéra and Roya valleys. Your journey begins in the Sospel basin’s olive groves before you tackle the mountain ridge paths with breathtaking views of the villages and hamlets some 700m below. End on a high with a jaw-dropping ride down a cliffside path to Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende.

        Donkeys are the perfect companion on your family outings, everyone loves them! They’re affectionate and are great company as you explore the mid and high-mountain paths. Their steady pace means you can take your time and really drink in the moment. For example, Marius, Nautilus and Roméo can’t wait to meet you in Castellar and join you on a trek be it for a few hours or two days. Other long-eared companions can join your family on a magical trek in the Valley of Wonders and Fontanalbe.
