“Stroll through the village, explore its narrow streets, stop off in the Place de l’Orme and take a moment for yourself.”
Gorbio
The Village of the Elm Tree
and the river
Gorbio owes its name to the river that runs through it. The area is quite small (7 km²) but very steep. In the centre of this medieval village, a series of little streets lead you through covered passageways and enchanting squares with ancient fountains. As you wander, take a good look at the architecture. You will find some magnificent old houses, identifiable by their antique doors.
Naturally, you will notice the elm tree from 1713 in the village square, with its impressive proportions. This magnificent tree in the village centre is the pride of the local population. A saying from the 18th century reminds us that under the elm, the village leaders met in order to take decisions for the community: “Every man, under the elm, is an ‘intero’ man (strong in his rights)”.
