A Legendary Route

with an extraordinary history

Renowned as a stage of the famous Monte Carlo Rally, the road leading to the Col de Turini is also a favourite spot for both cyclists and motorcyclists. Although narrow and winding, the surrounding landscape is well worth the effort. The astonishing Notre-Dame de la Menour Chapel, reachable via a giant stairway, is not to be missed.

The commune of Moulinet, situated at 800 metres above sea level in Mercantour National Park, is a vast area which includes part of the Turini ski resort (1,600 m), Camp d’Argent (1,800 m) and the Authion Trail. At 2,000 metres above sea level, in this amazing natural and cultural setting, you can explore military remains and taste the local tomme cheese made from cow’s milk. An eclectic range of activities to discover depending on the season!

THE MOULINET GLACIERES (ICE HOUSES)

At the turn of the 19th century, ice was produced and stored in “ice houses” dug into the ground to supply the coastal businesses, palaces and hospitals.

Notre-Dame de la Menour

It appears, at the turn of a bend, perched on a rocky headland overlooking the Bévéra gorges. This sanctuary of pilgrimage, the oldest aspects of which date back to the 12th century, has been remodelled at various points. The majestic stairway leading up to it, often compared to a mini Wall of China, was listed as a Monument Historique in 1937.

It is not so easy to park, but be sure to climb the impressive stairway to the building, like a true pilgrim. This is a peaceful place in the middle of nowhere, where the view is truly breath taking.

The Authion Massif

The Authion Massif in Mercantour National Park is the most southern peak of the Alps, reaching an altitude of 2,082 metres. It overlooks the Turin Forest and offers a breath-taking 360° panoramic view, from the Mercantour Massif down to the lowest foothills of the Alps, plunging into the Mediterranean.

A site of bloody battles from the end of the 19th century through to the Second World War, it is now a peaceful pastureland with its own trail recounting its history. Don’t miss out on sampling the local tomme and brous de pays at the Cabanes Vieilles dairy farm!

THE CABANES VIEILLES RUINS

In Cabanes Vieilles, crumbling barracks remind us of the brutal fighting of 1945. Now overgrown, they provide a picturesque view, with a Stuart tank seemingly sitting on a blanket of green.

The Authion Trail

and its Forts

Overlooking the surrounding valleys, this is a beautiful walk, steeped in history. Open to road traffic from May to November, the route can be accessed on foot, by bike or by car. In winter, you can explore the area on snowshoes in the magical atmosphere of snow-covered fir trees. This unusual hike provides an opportunity to discover the tragic battles that took place there up until liberation in April 1945.
