Sospel

Sospel’s notoriety is founded on this structure alone. Throughout the centuries, this unique tower has been painted, photographed, and filmed, captivating the eye and inspiring interest. With the Bévéra river flowing peacefully under its arches, it is in perfect harmony with the green landscape. At one time an essential crossing along the Salt Road, it provides a link between the two river banks and leads the way into the old town. The trompe l’oeil painted houses along the banks add further to its charm. A real picture postcard!

The impressive Saint-Michel Cathedral in Sospel is a superb example of Baroque architecture and well worth a visit. It stands in all its splendour on Place Saint-Michel. You may well be surprised to find such a magnificent structure in a village. Together with the Chapels des Pénitents and the houses in the archways, it forms a perfectly preserved architectural ensemble, like a theatre set frozen in time. Let yourself be transported to another time and place… Without detracting from its beauty, the 13th century bell tower contrasts with the Baroque facade, adding an unexpected touch.

Another stunning discovery in Sospel is its three forts. It may come as a surprise to find the Maginot Line in our region, yet Sospel is one of the most fortified Maginot sites in France. Because of the strategic challenges the location presented, three forts were established to defend the surrounding area.
