Cap Martin Park

Attracted by this monumental yet discreet gate, I was surprised to discover this park for the first time. Inaugurated in 1993 following the transfer of land to the commune, the park is divided into two zones, one laid out according to the principle of formal gardens, the other, wilder, home to an exceptional collection of century-old olive trees. Classified as a "Remarkable Tree Plantation of France" in 2018, the site is an invitation to stroll and offers an open-air museum trail featuring some thirty contemporary works. A few years ago, while looking at a painting that reminded me of this haven of peace, I discovered that it was signed by a surprising artist: Winston Churchill! And as early as the 1930s, when he was staying in the villas adjoining the park, he was already indulging in his favorite pastime, painting. In the late '50s, during his many visits to his publisher, who had bought Coco Chanel's villa, he loved to paint among the olive trees on the property, in the Roquebrune hills. There is no more total distraction than painting," he used to say. I know of nothing that, without tiring the body, absorbs the mind more completely." This activity, which he practiced regularly, including on the battlefield, helped to relieve his constant bouts of depression.
