Fort Saint-Roch

Historic site and monument, Military Patrimony, Fort, Heritage of the twentieth century in Sospel
9 Full-fare
  • Built between 1930 and 1934, it was designed so that 240 soldiers could live there in wartime as if in a submarine, without seeing daylight for a full three months. Its four blocks descend as far as 28 metres underground. Musée de la Résistance.

  • The Saint Roch fort is part of the Maginot Line. Built in the 1930s, it required 5000 m3 of concrete and 385 tonnes of steel. The mission entrusted to the structure was not only to participate in the continuity of firing with neighboring structures to form a line of resistance, but also to block the Sospel-Breil railway line with its 75mm canon and its two 81 mm mortars of frontal action.
