Let us tell you about the sumptuous period that made the town famous. In the second half of the 19th century, Menton welcomed members of high society from all over Europe. This golden period came to an end with the outbreak of the First World War.
Attachment to France coincided with a boom in tourism, spurred on by the medical theories of Henry Bennet, and the launch of major town-planning projects: the port and the railroad in 1869. From 1872 onwards, the town expanded. Arterial roads were built to the west, followed in the 1880s by the boulevard de Garavan to the east. Palaces and villas were built in these new districts. From then on, Menton became a must-see resort for the aristocracy and the wealthy.
