  • It's a demanding out-and-back in terms of elevation gain, but O how rewarding in winter and spring. The path twists and turns steadily upwards, with the sea on the right and the snow-capped peaks of Bego and Grand Capelet on the left until late spring...

  • You can start your ascent from the hamlet of Libre or Giastévé - you'll gain a few metres!
At the top of Roche Fourquin, you'll find the remains of a blockhouse... from Mussolini's Italy! Libre and Piene Haute only became French in 1947.

    There are two options:
    - Either leave the hamlet of Libre, heading towards the church and cemetery, signposts 417 then 418.
    - Or continue to the end of the road and park in the hamlet of Giasteve: take marker 424 for the path that goes right under the hamlet, skirting the houses before climbing to the left and joining the ridge line, which it will not leave until you approach the Roche du Tron.

At the DFCI cistern, you will find the path coming from the hamlet of Libre. Keep climbing, and you'll be encouraged by the view that opens up with every hairpin turn you make: the sea - the mountain, the sea - the mountain, and so on.

The path winds its way across the steep, arid slopes beneath the crests of Mont Tron and Roche Fourquin: pastureland for sheep and goats accustomed to this austere, fragrant, half-Mediterranean, half-mountain diet.

Be sure to close the animal gates as you find them.

Climb a sort of gorge, a step that takes you to the ridge line at marker 437.

A little further up on the left is the unmarked path that takes you to Roche Fourquin, with its well-deserved panoramic view from 1420 m, 460° from the sea of the Italian Riviera to the snow-capped peaks of the Mercantour.
