The ensemble, consisting of the Piène Basse station and its base, is a faux-tunnel-type structure covering the road on a steep slope along the Roya. It is exceptional, despite its derelict state.
During the construction of the Vintimille-Breil sur Roya railway line, the Italian railways set up a station in Piène Basse a few metres from the French border.
In 1947, these infrastructures were transferred to the SNCF, which did not restore them due to the relocation of the border line.
