Refuge de Valmasque, winter

Managed by the Club Alpin Français, this refuge promises a memorable winter experience in one of the most spectacular settings in the Alps. Nestled at an altitude where the snow sculpts breathtaking panoramas, the Refuge de Valmasque offers adventurers an ideal base from which to explore the region's snow-covered trails and wild landscapes. It's the perfect place for those looking to get away from the beaten track and test their skills on mountainous terrain; a knowledge of off-piste snowy terrain is a must, as the climb here is technical at this time of year, not least because of its steep topography and northerly exposure. After a long day's hiking, warm up by the wood-burning stove, share your stories with other hikers and enjoy a hot meal. Prepare to be amazed by the stars as never before, thanks to the refuge's remoteness and altitude. The absence of light pollution makes every night spectacular, with starry skies that inspire and revitalize. During unstaffed periods, the FFCAM shelter keeps one section accessible and open—the “winter shelter”—to serve as a place of refuge and emergency assistance. General amenities: Wood stove, blankets, dishes, lighting. No gas, no water. To avoid overcrowding, reservations are recommended during this period.
