The current Rue de FRance

Historic site and monument in Tende
  • The Rue de France, the gateway to the medieval village, takes you to discover the traces of the past and feel the special atmosphere of this village which has kept the same physiognomy of the last few centuries, following the route of the medieval main street.

  • It became a one-way street (from north to south) in the 17th century to deal with the rising number of muleteers and merchants travelling on the « Real Strada » from Nice to Torino. Above doorways along the road you can steel see the traditional lintels with engravings of mottos or coats of arms. On the right, several alleyways going uphill bear the name of Beatrice Lascaris de Tende, who lived in the 14th century and whose tragic destiny was narrated in an opera by Vincenzo Bellini (1833).
