The Via Julia Augusta was founded by Emperor Augustus in 15BC and takes you on a trip back in time to Ancient Rome. It’s peppered with Roman ruins between La Turbie and Ventimiglia. The road starts with the Trophy of Augustus, a majestic monument built in honour of the pacifying emperor, then comes the ascent to Mont des Mules, a former Celt-Ligurian oppidum and stunning Mediterranean vista. The route ends at the Lumone Tomb in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, all that’s left of the Roman stopping place of Lumone. Menton’s Prehistory Museum is home to some Roman exhibitions and rounds the outing off nicely. Give your break in the Riviera a bit of Roman flavour!
The dizzying ridge line spans 80km and winds along at an altitude of over 2000m! The High Salt Road on both sides of the ridge line brings you a unique view of the coast on one side and Mont Bégo on the other. The road used to connect France and Italy but is now heaven for thrill-seekers and outdoor sports fans. The sprawling landscapes are a playground for quads, motorbikes and 4x4s. Hikers and cyclists haven’t been forgotten with specific days just for them.

The Fort Route covers most of the fortifications on the coast in Authion and the ridge on Col de Tende. From Menton, the route’s start point, to Col de Turini, the section through the Menton, Riviera & Merveilles area is bursting with incredibly beautiful scenery ranging from Mediterranean landscapes to breath-taking mountains. Families can explore at their own pace whilst cycling or motorbike fans can go wild on the mountains’ hairpin turns. The route has something for everyone. Fancy a bit of unspoilt nature? Head to the the Authion mountain range or Mercantour National Park. Feeling peckish? Stop in the mountain villages. If you’re travelling with kids then take a break at Camp d’Argent, an amazing year-round adventure playground!
