Ideal for families and young children, this grassy Alpine path cut into the rock face on the Val Castérino begins in the high mountains (2050m).
-
The track initially goes through a wood of larches. It then reaches the Alpine pasture of Barchenzane, where you have a splendid view of the Val Castérino: a mixture of prairies, groves and scattered houses on either side of the wide watercourse.
At marker 372, head towards "Col du Sabion": At 2236m altitude, the path passes three vaulted buildings which are covered in grass: these are former military shelters which date back to the 19th century.Having crossed the Alpine pasture of Sabion,...The track initially goes through a wood of larches. Down below on the Italian side, is the small Lago della Vacca, which is slowly being taken over by sediment. Chamois and ibex can often be seen.Follow the same itinerary for the return journey.

Access by car to the Baisse de Peïrefique is via a rough road, narrow in places. It's best to take a slightly higher vehicle or a 4X4.
After passing through the hamlet of Casterino, the initially tarmac track becomes dirt and leads to the Potamou barrier, one of the "gateways" to the national park.
Turn right onto the track towards Baisse de Peyrefique. After 5km from Potamou, park your vehicle in the parking lot next to marker 371 and follow the signs for "Col du Sabion".
Parking: Baisse de Peïrefique.
