Description
"Membra Jesu nostri" ("the members of our Jesus") is a cycle of 7 cantatas of the concerto-aria type, a form that appeared in Germany in the 1660s, composed by Dietrich Buxtehude, one of the most admired musicians of his time.
These cantatas are inspired by medieval spiritual poems, lamenting one after another the wounds of Christ. Each cantata is dedicated to a part of Jesus' crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, chest, heart and face; in each, biblical words referring to the limb concerned frame the verses of the hymn text.
