Description
A key structure in the Maginot Line, reaching an elevation of 847 m, the fort houses numerous artillery pieces. A museum dedicated to the Alpine Army has been established there.
It offers a fascinating panoramic view stretching from the Authion mountain range to the Mediterranean Sea.
As a special exception, the E06 Maginot Fort will be open to visitors after the tour of Fort Suchet, according to the following schedule:
1) at 2:30 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday) --> a single 2-hour GUIDED tour of Fort Suchet
2) After the tour of Fort Suchet --> for those who wish, a 1-hour-and-30-minute GUIDED TOUR of the
Maginot E06 fortification.
Built at the summit of Mont Barbonnet, which rises to 847 meters, it blocked the Bévéra Valley and the Col de Braus, thereby protecting Nice. This summit was fortified on several occasions: first in 1883–1886, with the construction of a Séré de Rivières fort, which was subsequently modernized from 1891 to 1917, and then again in 1931–1935, as an artillery fortification as part of the Maginot Line.
Its mission was to prevent an invasion of Nice by monitoring the Bévéra Valley, the Col de Castillon, and the Col de Braus. From the time of its construction, it housed two Mougin Model 1876 turrets, each armed with two 155L guns, making it one of the three most heavily armored fortifications in France in 1887.
After a guided video presentation, the tour begins on the upper levels of the fort and continues through the interior galleries (caponiers, cross-passage shelters), the Mougin turret, the barracks (kitchen, bakery), and the museum galleries.
