An exceptional concert for Les BaroQuiales 2026! Dolce Folia by Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu at Sospel Cathedral! When music and dance merge...
DOLCE FOLIA - 9pm in the Cathedral St Michel de Sospel
Ensemble LE CONCERT DE l'HOSTEL DIEU
Of Portuguese origin, follia is linked to the world of folk music. The principle behind its success is simple: a stubbornly repeated bass on which variations are built. Adopted by the Italians and then by the whole of Europe, it evolved towards greater virtuosity under Corelli and Vivaldi. Its spirit became synonymous with creativity and freedom.
The mixed music on this program takes us on a journey from the Iberian Peninsula to southern Italy, to the sounds of stubborn bass dances such as follie and tarantella, whose hypnotic power is matched only by the wild energy they exude. The refined repertoire of the palaces rubs shoulders with that of popular music. Can their hypnotic power cure the sweet madness inside you? Or maybe they'll just fuel it.
