Heading for the hinterland: the natural attractions of the Roya Valley

Escaping both the heat and the crowds of the coast is possible with Menton, Riviera & Merveilles. Head for the Roya Valley, with its natural pools and wonderfully cool gorges, nestled in unspoilt natural surroundings. We simply can’t resist sharing our top picks with you, along with some practical tips for a great day out.

Le Bain du Sémite, in Saorge

This natural pool is renowned for its spectacular setting, nestled amongst the rocks at the foot of the hilltop village of Saorge. This spot promises a moment that is as peaceful as it is invigorating! The area is surrounded by flat rocks, perfect for laying out your towel or enjoying a picnic in complete tranquillity.

  • Access: a hiking trail from Saorge, about a twenty-minute walk over uneven terrain. Le Bain du Sémite is also accessible by car, with parking available nearby.
  • Shade: available thanks to the enclosed nature of the gorges.
  • Difficulty: moderate access; take care on the slippery rocks near the water’s edge.
  • Safety: unsupervised swimming; avoid swimming when the water flow is strong following rainy weather.
  • Best time to visit: early in the morning, to enjoy the spot before the summer crowds arrive.

The Audin basins, at Fanghetto

A lesser-known spot, straddling the Italian border, prized for its clear waters and unspoilt atmosphere. Fanghetto, a charming border hamlet where you can enjoy a peaceful swim in bucolic surroundings. The river flows gently here, flanked by greenery and white pebbles. Several small natural pools await you, perfect for cooling off and relaxing!

  • Access: The site is accessible by car, with a few parking options near the village. Access to the river involves a short walk from the hamlet of Fanghetto along a path that can be damp and slippery in places.
  • Shade: available, thanks to the dense vegetation lining the riverbank.
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate.
  • Safety: no lifeguards on duty; take care on the rocks and watch the water level.
  • Best time to visit: on weekdays or in the late afternoon to enjoy the peace and quiet of the site.

The Bévéra Gorge and its pools, in Sospel

In Sospel, the Bévéra river forms several natural pools within easy reach of the village, perfect for a refreshing dip after visiting the old bridge.

The Sospel botanical trail is shaded and takes you on a journey of discovery through the local flora, leading to a lovely spot by the water. Perfect for a refreshing break in the heart of nature!

  • Access: very easy, just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Sospel. The trail starts to the north of Sospel, on the D2204 (Route du Col de Brouis). You can park at the trailhead or in town.
  • Shade: varies depending on the pools; some are well sheltered by trees.
  • Difficulty: easy, suitable for families.
  • Safety: unsupervised area; take care when diving into areas where the depth is not guaranteed.
  • Best time to visit: in the morning for the coolest water, or at the end of the day to avoid the midday heat.
